Does the filter affect the audio on digital?

I'm enjoying my new SDS 200 and I am getting a lot of stations. With the help of people here, and Tim giving me a lot of help, I have all my Favorite lists established and I am happy with my purchase.

My question is in regards to the RISCON system. I can get everything from Westerly to Woonsocket with a good signal in all Zones. However, the audio on a few stations sounds like the dispatcher is speaking through a pillow. Muffled. I know there is a lot of discussion on filter settings and I have mine set to Wide Normal for RISCON.

While the majority of the RISCON transmissions are clear, the other day I could not understand anything the Lincoln Fire dispatcher was saying and I have a difficult time understanding what a certain Providence Fire female dispatcher says.

Is it just the voice or could the filter setting have anything to do with it?

Not having any experience with an SDS or with RISCON, I will tell you with certainty that console radios that are running on P25 channels provide far different quality audio when a headset is used versus a desk mic. The desk mic is nowhere near as crisp and clear. I wonder if this has something to do with what you are finding.

Chief, the 511 Tactical Dispatch Pillow rollout is exclusively for departments that would like to encrypt their signal but can't afford to do so....

But seriously folks, I don't think it's a filter setting issue to be honest. Ironically I use Wide-Normal from here as well for RISCON, which I can hear most of the time on the East Zone with my new yagi. I'm guessing that it's as Greg suggests. Easy enough to change the filter setting though and take it out of the equation as the source of the problem.
