American Airlines 94 In Flight Emergency

Monitoring Boston Center with AAL 94 out of NY, international flight diverting to Logan with cracked windshield. Watching on ADSB Exchange, descending into BOS right now at about 23000 feet, 150 miles east of Cape Cod so they were up there when this occurred. Boston Center ZBW17 ACK in use 133.450.
 
I have them live on my ADS-B system. Looks like ADSB Exchange data may be delayed as the positions aren't the same.
 
MSP State 35472 broadcasting this info as well. And my error on positions, software setting on my system.
 
He's making the turn over Beverly for final approach now. Can still hear him on 126.5 but weak; lost him on my ADSB at about 2151.

I've seen videos online where they perform this in the simulator, the procedure on how to fly without a windshield. It's fascinating stuff.

Similar to how to fly should the side window pop open.

They were at or close to cruising altitude as they were about 225 NM east of me when they called it in and made the turn back. At that altitude if the windshield came out I would expect "drastically negative" results.

I saw it on 25 news this morning also; Bill I haven't looked at your link yet but no cause was given. I guess there won't be one given for a while with investigations etc. It was a 777 so it can't be too old of a plane, but I guess that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I was fortunate to hear the incident; I don't normally scan civil aviation but turned on a dedicated scanner due to the harsh weather conditions.
 
I watch Air Disasters on Smithsonian. The windshields are multi layer and I think that it's if the inner layer cracks they are in danger of losing the entire window. Which at that altitude and speed would be no fun at all.

There as an incident where maintenance used the wrong screws when replacing a window and the window blew out and sucked the co pilot halfway out. They landed successfully and the co pilot survived.

That's probably why they now practice flying if the windshield blows out totally.
